James S. Isherwood, 75, died unexpectedly on August 22, 2025, in Plymouth, MA, after a brief illness.
Mr. Isherwood was born in Fall River, MA, on February 25, 1950, to James and Martha Isherwood. Mr. Isherwood attended Somerset Schools before studying at University of Bridgeport, CT, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education in 1972. He later received his Master of Education in Rehabilitation Administration from Northeastern University, Boston, MA, in 1979. He served 31 years for the US Government Veterans Administration in Brockton, MA and West Roxbury, MA, starting in correctional therapy and moving to serving as the Case Manager for Rehabilitative Medicine.
Mr. Isherwood was preceded in death by his sister, Janice Migneault, of Somerset, MA, and is survived by his loving wife Madeleine Isherwood, of Plympton, MA, loving son James Slater Isherwood II, of Brooklyn, NY and his fiancée, Anne Ray, sisters-in-law Charlotte Hebert of Windham, CT and Suzanne Parent of Somerset, MA, several nieces and nephews, and a large community of friends and neighbors.
He was an avid outdoorsman, including hunting, fishing, canoeing, and scuba diving. A 40+-year member of the Upland Sportsmen's Club, he was also devoted to enjoying the outdoors in his family's home away from home in Turner, ME. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Mitchell Club, of Middleborough, MA.
He served as an instructor in firearms safety for over 40 years. He enjoyed fishing and hunting expeditions, including moose hunting in deep woods Maine in 2021.
He and his wife shared annual beach visits to the Caribbean with friends both old and new.
Memorial visiting hours will be held on Friday, September 12th from 10-12:00 at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 216 Main St (Rt. 106) Kingston. A private graveside service will folllow. Friends and relatives are invited to a reception at the Upland Sportsmans Club, 76 Upland Rd, Plympton, from 1-4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in celebrating Mr. Isherwood's surviving cancer in 2007 to support cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284, or via dana-farber.org/gift .
