Joan E. Cahalane (Connors) passed away on August 9, 2026, at the age of 82. She is the beloved mother of Julie Cahill of Kingston, Jennifer Stefani and her husband Kris of Plymouth, Andrew and his wife Alane of Weston and Timothy and his wife Caroline of Wellesley.

She is the loving and cherished Nana to Molly (Stephen Saville) and Nora Cahill, Lucy and Chloe Stefani, Niall and Angus Cahalane, and Ella, Teddy, Brennan and Colin Cahalane.

Joan was born and raised in Dorchester, the daughter of the late Joseph and Eileen (Crowley) Connors and the sister of Suzanne Billingham of Plymouth and Nancy Mulligan of Duxbury.

She graduated from Monsignor Ryan Memorial High School, and she studied French and earned her bachelor of arts at Emmanuel College.

She worked as a fifth-grade teacher and then the principal of Holy Family School in Rockland. In her career she made a lasting impact on hundreds of children and their families and proved the enduring power of education.

During the last year as she was undergoing cancer treatment, Joan was determined to live life as fully as possible with a grateful heart. Her family is forever indebted to the many individuals who lovingly cared for her during her illness, including doctors and nurses at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, as well as the wonderful staff of Benchmark at Hanover.

Joan was devoted to her children and grandchildren and gave each one of them the gift of being known and loved for who they are. She was strong and fiercely independent. She connected with people wherever she went and had a keen way of understanding people and putting others’ needs ahead of her own. She was selfless and loving and so funny. She was a lifelong learner who was passionate about food, wine (white, frosty cold), travel, literature and culture. She is an example of how to love and how to be loyal. The gift of her life cannot be measured.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Church, 601 Tremont Street, Duxbury, on Friday, August 14th, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Mayflower Cemetery, Duxbury. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to celebrate her extraordinary life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joan’s memory to Dr. Douglas Rubinson’s research fund at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute or to the Jimmy Fund to support the research that is transformative for cancer patients and their families.
