It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Gary Naphen, affectionately known to many as "Gramps," who left this world peacefully on August 31, 2026, at his home with loved ones by his side. Born on June 15, 1936, in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Richard was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend whose life was a tapestry of love, service, and dedication.

 Richard was born to Rose M. Naphen (Rivers) and James M. Naphen, and grew up in a lively household with his siblings Mary E. Naphen, Robert J. Naphen Sr., Rose F. Naphen, and Loretta Naphen, all of whom predeceased him. His early years were filled with adventure and learning, leading him to graduate in 1955 from Boston Trade School.

 A proud veteran, Richard served his country with distinction in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he was a Machine Gunner with the 7th Cavalry. His courage and dedication were emblematic of the love he bore for his country and his fellow servicemen.

 In 1964, Richard married the love of his life, Patricia A. Naphen (Clifford), at St. Augustine's in South Boston. Together they crafted a beautiful life centered around family, love, and shared adventures. He was a devoted father to his daughter Patricia Anne Naphen and is survived by his cherished daughter Anne-Marie Naphen.

 Richard's love for life extended beyond his family, encompassing a wide range of interests and passions. He was a skilled mechanic, having worked with Mass Tire for 45 years, and was actively involved in NEMA racing, a testament to his vibrant spirit and love for speed. His hobbies were as diverse as they were thrilling; he found joy in riding horses, hunting, fishing, driving racing cars, racing horses, and creating wonders in his woodworking shop.

 Gramps, as he was fondly known, had a gentle heart and a quick wit that endeared him to everyone he met. He was the kind of person who was always there—whether it was tightening a cinch before a ride, standing on the back of a bucking chute, working on a carburetor, or cheering from the sidelines. His presence was a source of support, encouragement, and sometimes a little constructive criticism, but always delivered with love.

 Richard's legacy is carried on by his grandchildren, Christopher A. Spector, HarleyAnne R. Hamilton, and Cody L. Hamilton, and his best friend and great-granddaughter, Hazel Mae Jackson. He is also remembered fondly by his nephews, Robert J. Naphen Jr. and Donald J. Naphen, along with many other nieces, nephews, and loved ones whose lives he touched.

 A private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Richard's life and his profound impact on all who knew him. As we remember Richard, let us celebrate the joy he brought into our lives and the enduring legacy of love and laughter he leaves behind.
