Wendell Sammet of Bryantville (Pembroke) Massachusetts died peacefully in his sleep on November 9, 2023. He was born on November 23, 1925 to Minnie and Joseph Sammet of Milton Massachusetts.
Wendell was a legend in the world of show dogs. Wendell was the first recipient of the American Kennel Club's first Breeder of the Year Award in 2002. He was also the first recipient of the Ann Rogers Clarke (Dog) Hall of Fame Award in 2008. In 2003 and 2004 Wendell won Best in Show for Groups at the Westminster Kennel Club. There are numerous other awards, medals and commendations that Wendell has garnered over his lifetime.
Wendell was very well known in the world of dogs for breeding poodles for temperament and health. There was high demand of the litters he produced over the years. He authored many articles over the years in various dog industry publications.
Wendell fought in the Battle of the Bulge in World War 2 and was a prisoner of war in Poland for six months. He was a Purple Heart recipient. He never talked about his military service.
Wendell is the last of the Sammet line. He will be missed by his many, many friends and acquaintances all over the country.
