William J. McCarthy, 87, of Duxbury, formerly of Whitman, died on May 12th. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances (Pegnam) McCarthy. Bill was a WWII Naval Veteran and a Knight of Columbus. After graduating from Whitman High School and the University of Massachusetts, he dedicated much of his life to the McCarthy Brothers Ice Cream Company. He was a longtime member of the Marshfield Country Club. In addition to his wife he is survived by his seven children and their spouses, William and Mary Ann McCarthy, Richard and Lorraine McCarthy, Fran and Christina (McCarthy) Doran, Frank and Marcia McCarthy, Paul and Michelle McCarthy, Paul and Ann McCarthy Joyce and Julie McCarthy-Keir. He was grandfather to 16 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother and sister in law Edward R and Louise McCarthy and their children Carol McCarthy Maguire, Margaret (McCarthy) Bonatatibus and John Paul McCarthy. He was the brother of the late Sister Viterbo McCarthy, CSJ, Sister Margaret William McCarthy,CSJ and Thomas J. McCarthy. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday May 17th at 11:00 AM at Holy Family Church in Duxbury. Burial will be at the Bourne National Cemetery at a later date.
